Why A Mixed Diet Is Best For Us

Some animals live wholly on vegetable foods—the horse, the cow, the sheep and the goat, for example. These herbivorous animals have long, capacious intestines, with a large pouch, the caecum, where grass and hay can be digested. Carnivorous—meat-eating—animals have a much shorter digestive tract, and are unable to digest grasses at all. Man’s digestive tract lies in between these two types—his intestines are of moderate length, and he can digest a non-bulky mixed diet, which, it seems to most scientists, he ought to have. Read Dr. L. Jean Bogert’s Diet and Personality, with its subtitle, “Fitting Food to Type and Environment,” published by Macmillan especially the chapter on the food faddist, if you’re interested in pursuing this subject.

Personally, I believe in a high-protein diet, both for reduction and for health, which is not always possible on a true vegetarian diet.

Professor Chittenden at Yale University believed in a low-protein diet, and conducted some interesting but not-at-all-conclusive experiments—and ever since then, everyone who believes in a low-protein diet has been quoting him—without knowing what he was attempting to prove. All he did prove, it seems to me, was that one can live on a low-protein diet for a short time. Practically all of the men in Chittenden’s experiment returned to their former eating habits, once the short experiments were over. I still believe in a high-protein diet, which all of the later scientists seem to agree is far better.

Gayelord Hauser’s books are among the best for laymen, and preach some excellent health habits. But I don’t approve of his vegetable salt and potassium broth —because they are expensive for what you get, and contain more salt than I consider good for a reducing diet.

I don’t believe in as much laxative as his Swiss Kriss gives you. I also think he overestimates the good qualities of molasses. But on the whole, I think you’ll get a lot of good out of Hauser’s books—his new Look Younger, Live Longer, as well as The Gayelord Hauser Cook Book, which I’ll refer to again. You’ll do better following the Hauser theories than you will following most of the diets recommended by less informed writers. They’re interesting and well balanced, for the most part —and contain meat as well as eggs and fruit and vegetables.

One of the worst diets ever foisted on the public is the Hollywood Eighteen Day Diet. This was once so popular that you could get it in any restaurant, by just mentioning what day of the diet you were on.

Supposedly sponsored first by a California citrus fruit company, and now by a cracker company, it is still around. Like most other diets, it won’t hurt you for eighteen days. It is, however, deficient in proper nutritive elements. One day’s breakfast consists of one-half of a grapefruit, one slice of Melba toast and coffee without cream or sugar. For luncheon, you get the other half of the grapefruit, one egg, a bit of raw vegetable and again toast and coffee, and for dinner, meat, salad, grapefruit and coffee. You’ll lose on it, of course. But you can do better!

The pineapple and lamb chop diet was started by a reputable physician in order to give a Hollywood star a diet she would enjoy.

“Choose any meat and any fruit you like,” he told her. She chose pineapple and lamb chops.

“That’s your diet!” he said. Curiously enough, it’s a good diet—high in protein, low in carbohydrates. You’ll reduce on it. The only thing the matter with it is that it is monotonous. You can chose any one meat, and any one vegetable or fruit, and make up your own diet— and you’ll probably do just as well with it. For a long haul, I don’t think you’ll like it too well.
