Think About A Diet That Suits You

Everyone is dieting these days. Or practically everyone. That’s the way it seems, anyhow. You can’t go to a party without hearing of a couple of new diets or having someone produce a dog-eared slip of paper from purse or bill fold containing a diet a doctor has given him or her, or one that has been cut out of a paper or magazine.

Some of these diets are excellent. Some are old-fashioned or unscientific. All of them are supposed to produce wonderful results. Only a few are so badly balanced as to be actually harmful.

There’s one good thing about all of them. It doesn’t matter much what they recommend. Why? I’ll tell you—it’s simple enough. Few diets are harmful, if followed for only a short period, for most of us have enough reserve energy in our systems to take care of us for a period of from three to eight weeks. We’ll stay perfectly healthy for that length of time, living on our own body, providing there is no infection or serious toxic protein loss. On a badly balanced diet, we’d be out of luck after that length of time. But few people pursue those trick diets longer than a few weeks.

But I hope you realize, by now, that diet alone, without proper preparation—without the proper mental attitude—is not going to do what it’s supposed to do, and is not going to help you over a long period of time. Your diet, with the proper changes, which you’ll learn about, too, will help you for as long as you stay on it— and I hope you will stay on it.

That is, if, by the time you start it, you are ready for it. You certainly should be! But don’t, I beg of you, copy it off and hand it around, or try to put your friends on it. Apart from the other things you must do—the exercises which you’ll learn about, the things I hope you’ve already learned—it won’t work. Not as a magic get-thin-quick diet, anyhow! It’s just an integral part of the way you think yourself thin.

Many “recommended” diets show a lack of knowledge of psychology, digestion, metabolism, nutrition and the functions of the human body. Not that all published diets are bad. On the contrary— some are good, and good for you, and are accompanied by excellent and helpful advice. But if you don’t know about foods and about the human body, you’re apt to go wrong.

Many movie stars of a previous generation suffered serious upsets as a result of those bad diets. A few died others became dangerously ill. Now, Hollywood has, for the most part, learned not to go on diets without medical supervision.

One actress became very ill on a diet of lemon juice and raw vegetables and raw fruit. Another added black coffee to that same diet—and was just as ill.

Others, wanting to get thin in a hurry, added bran to their reduced diets, “for roughage.” They got roughage —and a bad case of stomach trouble at the same time. Intestinal irritation, indigestion and colitis can result from too much roughage. So don’t add bran or any other roughage to your diet without medical supervision.
If I say one word against a vegetarian diet, I’ll get letters from dozens of vegetarians saying I don’t know what I’m talking about. I can’t even tell you not to go on a vegetable diet without your doctor’s advice, because most vegetarians don’t believe in doctors, either, so that recommendation will be just as displeasing to them. However, I find that most vegetarians are not vegetarians in the true sense—they add fruit, eggs, milk, butter and cheese to their diet, making it a good, well-balanced diet, but not at all a vegetarian diet, in a narrow sense.

Vegetables are wonderful food, but to my way of thinking they must be supplemented by such foods as milk, eggs, cheese, high-protein cereals, and even meat and fish.
