Successful Weight Loss – Camp To Home Transition Tips

By WeightLossUser | June 2, 2009

Undoubtedly, it was a hard decision to send you child off to a weight loss camp to help them with their weight. Not only are these camps costly, but spending an entire summer away from your child and missing out on their growth and maturity is difficult to deal with. After the time and money that you and your family put in to the weight loss camp, it is important that you take the necessary steps at home to ensure that the lessons learned by your child at the camp stay with them. Below, I’ve explained some of the top reasons that children fail upon returning home. Take note of these struggles and take the necessary steps to avoid making these same mistakes when your child returns from camp this summer.

Unrealistic Expectations – Parents need to understand that child weight loss and adult weight loss are not the same thing. Many children “lose” weight in the process of growing. Although they don’t actually weigh less, they grow in to their weight to the point that they live at a healthy weight given their height and age. So, when your child returns home, do not expect them to have lost a ton of weight. Sure, they’ll lose some, but keep in mind that your investment in weight loss camp should be viewed as a long-term investment more so than a short term one. As time goes on and your child continues to use the strategies learned at weight loss camp, he or she will slowly move towards a healthy living weight.

Parental Guilt – Many parents feel guilty to some extend for their child becoming obese. This becomes a problem if, after your family has taken the right steps and sought the outside help of a weight loss camp, the parents do not change their view of the whole thing. Parents must be able to forgive themselves for the mistakes they made prior to sending their child to camp and make the necessary changes to ensure their child’s success.

No Changes in the Kitchen – Parents need to do their part to ensure that weight loss camp lessons are reinforced at home. This means that families need to clean out the kitchen while they have a child at weight loss camp and clear out all of the junk. Replace unhealthy foods with healthier ones and use this as an opportunity to improve the eating habits of the entire family. If your child returns home to a pantry stocked full of junk foods, you can bet that they will quickly be back to eating the kind of stuff that got them sent to fitness camp in the first place. Don’t tempt them.

Parents that are Too Strict – While it is important to make some changes around the house, especially with regards to lifestyle and eating habits, it is also important that you do not go too far off the deep end. If parents become too strict and begin forcing their children to do things a certain way instead of allowing them and encouaging them to make the right decision, children can respond by being very rebellious. A treat now and again won’t hurt anybody, so don’t go over the top in limiting the unhealthy foods that your child consumes.

Promoting Inactivity – Everyone loves to vege out in front of the TV every once in a while and most parents have used TV or video games as an in-house baby-sitter. These things need to change and reduce in frequency. Provide ways every day for your child to be active and encourage them to participate. Organized after school activities are a great option or even things as simple as a family walk after dinner or a weekend trip to a state park.

The bottom line is that your child’s return from fitness camp needs to be viewed as an opportunity for your entire family to change some things. Forget about the past, begin eating healthier and exercising more, and do it without being too strict.
