Is It Possible? Indoor Cycling Made Interesting!

By EricHanson | October 22, 2009

I began developing virtual reality cycling videos because I was bored to tears watching either TV reruns or other mainstream cycling workout videos. Television reruns wont motivate you to perform at levels required to improve performance. And, most workout videos are filmed indoors and recording a group of people on stationary trainers. Where’s the fun in that? Cycling Videos Online is different! Take a look at indoor workout videos demos and see for yourself

The concept of Cycling Videos Online began when I wanted to be able to ride my favorite routes during the off season when it was too dark out. But, after demo-ing the initial video recording, it wasn’t enough to simply enjoy the scenery. I wanted to recreate the ride itself! So, I developed the training tools package. The first tools you should be aware of are the intensity and gradient tools. For example, when your ride approaches a hill, something on the screen tells you when to shift; or, when you sit on a wheel in a draft, something tells you when to down shift. So, I developed the gear ratio guide and the intensity meter.

Many other videos perplexed me with heart rates displayed as beats per minute. When I was 20 I might be able to match the pros, but, not any more. So, I converted the BPM to a percent of max displayed on the screen to make it easy to match the effort. All you need to simply do is have a heart rate monitor that displays your heart rate as a % of max, or know what your heart rate should read when performing at 60% of max, 65% of max, 70% of max and so on, and you will easily be able to match the efforts during the video. Here is a great video about how to use Virtual reality spinning videos.

But, this still wasn’t good enough. I wanted to know where I was along the route in the video. When you’re watching a 2D video, you have no idea of your location, that is very frustrating. So, I added two transparent maps in the heads up display, one with your position along the entire route and another with a close up displaying your speed and elevation. These maps are synced with the video. I also added a hill profile that is color coded with the maps to help you determine your elevation position. Then, I topped it all off with a cycling position graphic that pops up when it’s time to get out of the saddle and climb or when it’s time to hit the drops.

www.CyclingVideosOnline.com is what is created when you merge a cycling fool with a computer geek!
