A Good Way To Help Lose Weight

Here is an experiment you may want to try. It is not one of the “necessary” things for thinking yourself thin, such as writing down, each morning, the amount you
weigh, and, each night, the things you’ve eaten. But it has often helped people who are not too emotionally disturbed, and who are able to help themselves.
Buy a small note book. Those note books, again 1 Get a strong rubber band and a pen or pencil.
Those are all you’ll need. Each morning, as soon as you wake up, write down, for five minutes, all of your thoughts. Try to remember your dreams, if you can. No matter how confused or vague they are, write them down! If you can’t remember your dreams, write down all of the stray thoughts that run through your mind. Write down every thought, no matter how foolish or vague! Don’t try to be literary! Just write! For exactly five minutes. Then turn the page of the note book—and put a rubber band around the pages you’ve written.
The next morning, write again for five minutes. Do not read what you’ve written the day before. Again, when you’ve finished, put the rubber band around the pages. Do this for thirty days. At the end of thirty days, when you read the notes you’ve made, you’ll be surprised to find you’ve made a very thorough analysis of yourself. If you’ve been honest with yourself, the result will be valuable.
Another method of self-analysis that has helped a lot of people is the Personality Report. Write it as you would a news story. Know how to write a news story? It’s simple enough—in form, anyhow. It consists of the Five W’s: Who, What, When, Where and Why. Write a short self-portrait, using each of the five W’s as the basis of a paragraph. Tell yourself why you are fat, why you want to be thin, what you intend to do about it, even what you’ve learned about yourself in regard to your superfluous weight.
Perhaps these tests, though they may sound quite simple to you, will help you solve your own obesity problems. You may need more psychiatrical or psychological treatment. Your own state of mind, once you’ve had a medical examination, will determine that.
Or your physician may be able to determine, immediately, if you need mental as well as physical treatment, or if he can give you necessary psychosomatic analysis. Certainly you need treatment—expert treatment you haven’t been able to give yourself—or you wouldn’t be fat. With all of the progress that has been made in medicine and science, you’d be very foolish not to take advantage of the best treatment you can get. After all, you are your own most valuable possession. To stay as well and as young as possible means making the best of yourself. By being slender and alert and well-balanced and good-looking, you are giving to the world your best self—and you will get the best in return.
You can be practically anything you want to be, within reason—I’m not offering miracles—if you throw away the shackles of an Inferiority Complex, a false covering of fat and vague longings and wishes, and start doing the things you really want to do. Looking and feeling well will give you confidence, self-possession and, if you manage right, contentment.
You will get thin—and stay thin—only when you have conquered self. You must know yourself—gain a feeling of relaxation and peace, a freedom from fear. If you fed secure, you won’t have to eat the wrong foods, or too much food. No secure person actually craves food! You will eat—and enjoy—foods that are good for you. If you are starved for affection, you may believe it is food that you want. Get the affection! Don’t settle for food! You can help nature reduce you to your perfect proportions if you conquer self. Self-discipline is the only way to weight perfection, if you want to get—and stay— slender. The real secret of thinking yourself thin.
